Common Core Math 7th Syllabus

Course Description: 

Common Core 7th Math focuses on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings, geometric constructions and surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations.


Homework Policy:  Homework must be completed at the beginning of every class. Most assignments will come from student textbook that you will keep at home. If you ever get stuck, YOUR NOTES can provide you with extra help. Use your Assignment Log or Student planner to keep track of all homework assignments. There is NO extra credit given in this class.


Late Work:  All class assignments are to be completed by the end of period unless otherwise told. No late assignments will be accepted.


Quiz/Test Policy:  Quizzes and tests will be given every Friday.  A Chapter test will be given at the end of each unit and when needed. 


Grading are as follows:  Participation (Dispatch/Warm-Up) 10%, Test and Quizzes 40%. Homework 25% and Classwork 25%


Marking Policy:  Grades will be determined by your total points accumulated on warm-up, classwork, homework, tests, quizzes, notebooks, and participation, by the following scale:


90-100% = A

80-89%   = B

70-79%   = C

60-69%   = D

50% and below = Fail


Absences & Make-Up Work:  In order to make up work the student must inquire what work was missed. This can be done by asking a classmate or your teacher. If you need extra help, see me during, before or after school.


Class Expectations:   


#1 BE ON TIME - All students will be in assigned seats when the bell rings.


#2 BE PREPARED – All students will bring required materials to class such as notebooks, pencil, paper and completed assignments.


#3 BE RESPECTFUL – All students will show respect for themselves, the teacher, classmates and the classroom environment as a whole


#4 BE ON TASK – All students will listen attentively to the teacher and follow instructions.





1.Come to class on time.

2.Come to class prepared.  Bring pencil, binder and notebook, paper, and daily homework.

3.Be courteous and respectful to everyone and everything in the classroom.

4.Stay in your assigned seat.

5.Eating, drinking and chewing gum is NOT allowed in class.

6.The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell.




  1. The student will be warned and warning will be recorded.
  2. A second warning will be recorded also.  Student will receive U for Cooperation.
  3. A third warning will be recorded also.  Student will have nutrition detention or after school detention. Teacher will call parents. 
  4. A forth warning will be recorded and a referral to the Dean/Counselor.

Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. My name is Mr. Chau. As a math teacher, my main objective is to teach students common core math concepts, which will not only prepare them to do well in the Common Core state math tests and broaden their foundational math skills, but improve their problem solving skills in their daily lives.  In other words, the objective is to teach students math that will have application in their future lives and potentially increase their skills for the work place. 

Suggested Supplies/Materials

  • College wide ruled Composition/Spiral notebook (3 to 4 per semester)
  • College rule line papers (3 to 4 packs per semester)
  • Pencils, a pack of color pencils, mini stapler, a manual pencil sharpener.
