(Editor's Note: This important news element was published earlier on the school web site. Some community members have reported student safety concerns, particularly about the issue of students jaywalking or neglecting to look both ways before stepping into a crosswalk. Double parking is another concern as well.)

Streets adjacent to Lawrence Middle School will fill up with cars in a little more than one week as parents drop off and pick up students. Peak congestion times are 7:30-8:00 AM and 2:40-3:10 PM on Variel and Independence Avenues. Some parents have opted to arrive earlier or to drop off or pick up students on a close by street where there is less traffic. The speed limit in a school zone is 25 miles per hour. Double parking to drop off or pick up a student is prohibited and could result in the issuance of a parking ticket.

Please be very observant of pedestrian and bicycle traffic around the school. Two crosswalks are in front of the school entrance on Variel Avenue and are in heavy use at starting and dismissal times. Also, please be mindful of the parking restrictions in effect and posted on signs around the school.

News Update of September 19, 2016

Students must exercise caution whenever crossing a street. First, do not jaywalk--that is, cross a street where there is no crosswalk or clearly defined intersection. Second, when using a crosswalk, look both ways before attempting to cross, and pay attention to any signals at the intersection.

News Update of January 20, 2017

Lemarsh Street (north end of campus) has become a heavy traffic area both before and at the end of school. Please refrain from stopping in the middle of the street to pick up/drop off students.

News Update of May 15, 2017

Students must always exercise caution when crossing the street. Cross the street only at intersections with crosswalks. Look both ways before crossing.

Drivers are reminded that double parking to pick up a student can result in the issuance of a parking ticket.

Principal's Desk

The administration of the Smarter Balanced Assessments from the State of California will begin next week on April 24,  and will continue for the different grade levels until May 26, 2017.  I would like to emphasize the importance of school attendance on testing days, which includes no tardies and no early departures.  Please do not make medical or dental appointments on testing days, unless it is an emergency.

To encourage perfect attendance during our testing window, we will hold our Attendance Incentive Campaign from April 24 to May 26, 2017.  Please make sure that your child is present every day, with no late arrivals or early departures.  Students with 100% attendance will be included in a grade-level special assembly and their names will be entered into a raffle for gift cards.

I also would like to invite you to our Coffee with the Principal, to be held on April 25, 2017, at 8:00 AM in the Parent Center.  This month, our guest speaker will be Gretchen Ignacio, District Counselor, who will offer a workshop on “How to talk to your children.”

Lastly, I look forward to meeting you at our Spring Open House, May 11, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  This will also be the final night of our annual Lawrence Book Fair.  Please visit the Book Fair to peruse the books that are available for sale.

Thank you for your continued support!
